What’s the difference between single and double cylinder?

A common question when it comes to front door locks is whether to go with a single cylinder or double cylinder mechanism.

To put it simply, a single cylinder has keyed entry on only one side of the door. It is more convenient if you were to leave from inside the house, and offers a quicker exit if an emergency was to occur. For this reason, the fire department often recommends a single cylinder for front door locks.

On the other hand, a double cylinder lock has keyed entries on both sides of the door. That means if it has been locked from the outside, you will require a key to then unlock the door from the inside. It is a more protracted process, but offers enhanced security from unwanted visitors.

There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to choosing between the two. It is up to each individual, which is why both are still being made. Browse the Lane range and you’ll be sure to find plenty of options for whichever you choose.
